I remember when I moved to Singapore about 17 years ago. I have spent a significant part of my life away from home, since I was in boarding school, and then when I began working, I flew for International carriers. I loved living near family and had a very clingy 9-month-old child. Moving to Singapore, with 2 small dogs, one toddler, and a hubby who, as is expected, was busy at work with barely any time off, was very depressing! I went through frustration, exhaustion, and mostly grief at being so far away from family, and seriously wondered what the trajectory of my life was.
We have all had that moment when we have wondered why we were born. What is the purpose of my life? What am I here to accomplish? The answer, of course, is to learn, grow, evolve and along the way, clear the Karma we have with people. People often view karma as a form of punishment, but it is actually a simple philosophy that emphasises the consequences we incur as a result of our choices.
The Soul is immortal, and this World is very much in the words of the Bard, "a stage", a classroom of sorts. Every challenge we go through is a step towards completing the lesson that our soul chose for us in this lifetime. As divine beings and having had innumerable lives, we are surely masters of many crafts and philosophies. The lessons we have yet to master are the ones that we choose to experience in this lifetime, and they form our life lessons.
What are Life Lessons?
The Soul is immortal and thus has no urgency. The curriculum that the soul chooses for itself is not really quantifiable in human terms. Where we may have very tangible goals, such as graduation in a year, attending university, and then a cherished job that feels like one is not really sacrificing oneself at work, and so on. The Soul is not here to mark out milestones that seem smaller somehow in its view. It is not here in any manner to prove its worth. The Soul already knows it is divine. It is here to remember its light and to evolve so that it can merge with the divine. So, the soul has in its curriculum the lessons of love, forgiveness, mercy, compassion, empathy, and independence —the traits that we admire and that we all have latent within us. It is that potential that the soul is here to discover.
Does Knowing the Life Lesson offer any Value?
Do you remember being back at school? It was invaluable to have a lesson plan, as it allowed us to effectively plan our work and ensure we were on track for the exams. But the great news is that the soul does not need to sit any exams. If it doesn’t nail the lesson in this lifetime, another will follow. The urgency is more from the human part of us. The soul had picked the challenges, knowing what it was meant to learn. However, in the human realm, these lessons feel like pain we would rather live without, and yet, when the crisis passes, we realise that we have been refined and have evolved.
Every relationship that feels like a struggle actually shows us where love needs to expand, whether that is self-love or love for the other. It is meant to highlight areas of growth. Every ending that has occurred has been a soul contract carried to completion, allowing us to move on with grace and create something new. So, is it helpful to know one’s life lesson? Absolutely!!
Can you imagine knowing with crystal clear insight what one’s lesson is? We are no longer left to grapple for insights, trying to make sense of life’s randomness. It seems like a Eureka moment where everything just magically fits!! And honestly, the life lesson doesn’t feel like a philosophy when we try to understand. For instance, a client whose life lesson was Happiness mentioned, "Oh! my god!! When I’ve had a rough time, when I’ve been through the storms, my self-talk always was When will I be 'Happy', not rich, not successful, just ‘happy". That would perhaps be the most significant indicator - if you are going through a struggle, watch your language- it may hold cues to your soul lesson.
How many life lessons do we have?
We have a couple of primary life lessons and a few supplementary ones, all from the perspective of the soul.
Is the Lifelesson the Soul's Plan? Do the Ego and Body weigh in?
The ego has its own plan, and the life lesson it chooses for itself is unique, based on your date of birth. And, yes, even that lesson is a Eureka moment, which really frames our challenges and gives them context. The body also carries its unique code and a lesson encoded within it, much like a GPS, to steer it back on track. This manifests as gut feelings and an inner knowing, which can be accessed to provide a more holistic understanding of why we are here. Our life lesson is not something that we fons, it is who we become. The Life lesson, thus, is the polestar we navigate by, and knowing it from the unique perspectives of body, mind, and soul keeps us on track. Of course, knowing the coordinates we are heading to is always an advantage. It will also illuminate every dream that has inspired you; it was probably not random at all. It was your soul whispering its lessons and curriculum to you!! Our circumstances are, after all, under the characterisation of both destiny and free will. But what unfolds is often the result of a collection of vibrations, choices, and paths down those choices — each designed to awaken a deeper remembrance of who we truly are. Each leads us back to our life lesson.
How do you determine your life lesson?
In my experience, the life lesson is something that will deeply resonate. Watch your language- it will give you clues to what your life lesson is.
And suppose you do fancy a reading. In that case, The Lifelesson Reading is available at a promotional rate for October 2025, which reveals your primary life lesson and also provides insight into how it is currently unfolding in your life.
