This card celebrates the turning of life’s great wheel, seen in the tarot as The Wheel of Fortune, illustrating how unseen currents guide each of us toward our true place in the world. Karna’s miraculous birth, abandonment, and rescue remind us that even the wildest waves can carry us to exactly where fate intends.
Kunti, the youngest princess of the Yadava line, welcomed the great sage Durvasa into her father’s court, earning his favour through devoted service.
As Durvasa departed, he bestowed upon her a powerful mantra that could summon any deity. In his wisdom, the sage knew she would need this powerful chant to raise a dynasty and secure her husband's entry to heaven. Hindu theology believed that entry into heaven could only be granted if a man had cared for the next generation as a father. The story of why Pandu, the to-be husband of Kunti, could not have a child will be a subject for another day.
Kunti did not know that the deity she called upon would grant her a child.
Driven by youthful curiosity, Kunti tested the mantra at dawn and invoked Surya, the radiant Sun god himself.
Bound by the vow of the invocation, Surya appeared in golden splendour and, though reluctant, Kunti could not turn him away.
This divine union gave us Karna, who was born fully armoured with an unbreakable shell-like kavacha and jewelled kundalas.
Abandonment and the Journey through the Waves
Fearing social ruin as an unwed mother, Kunti placed her newborn in a basket and set it adrift on the Ashvanadi (Horse River).
The basket floated into the Charmanvati, now the Chambal, then into the Yamuna, and finally into the mighty Ganges River. Tossed by each current, the child’s golden armour glinted with every crest, as if the Sun himself was guiding his path. When the basket reached the banks of Anga (near present-day Bengal), it caught the eye of Radha, wife of the charioteer Adhiratha. Moved by the child’s divine glow, Radha and Adhiratha adopted him on the spot, naming him Vasusena and raising him in the warmth of stable life.
Embracing the Wheel of Fortune
When Bhaagya, Fate—the Wheel of Fortune turns up, it is a reminder for us that life’s currents will carry us where we most need to go, even when the waters run wild. Imagine Karna as an infant, set adrift on the roaring river. Tossed by each swell, he might have felt the world’s storms were against him. Yet every crest brought him closer to his destiny, guiding him downstream toward the humble stables where he would be raised with love and find his purpose, even if that might involve swimming against the tide.
Life, like that river, isn’t always calm. We can’t control every surge or sudden turn, but we can trust that each twist in our path holds meaning. The Wheel of Fortune card urges us to surrender to the flow, to honour the highs and lows as essential chapters in our story. Karna’s trials on the waves and life became the very gateway to his strength and generosity. Likewise, today’s challenges may be fate’s way of steering us toward greater courage and compassion.
So when you draw the Wheel of Fortune, remember Karna’s voyage: from uncertainty on the river’s crest to the safe warmth of a loving home. Take heart that every wave you face is part of a grand design.
Embrace the turning of the wheel, feel the current beneath your feet, and know that fate’s tide is always working to help you grow so you can always be brought back home to the core of who you are, which is always a masterpiece of the divine.
Have a blessed day!!
